She was my paternal great grandmother
Dark skin. Hard life.
Life was hard back then.
But she was my paternal great grandmother
And not just because she was my father's father's father's
wife,
But because she could fight
She could fight like a man, they say
She even fought men, they say
Try to give her the evil eye and she'd sock you in the jaw
with her asabache fist, they say
She had onyx eyes and she took no shit, they say
And she was my paternal great grandmother
be se she ran the cockring, yeah,
Always had a gallo in the fight,, yeah
I don't mourn the death of that cruel, bloody sport,
I must admit, perhaps with some chagrin,
well with some pride when they told me her chickens
yeah
was my paternal great grandmother
he loved to gamble and smoke tobacco with

1 the murky cigar smoke when she smelled blood
that's when she'd double up!
and she was my paternal great grandmother
e she lived to watch wrestling matches on the old TeV.
amily would all crack up and laugh at how'd she'd
shout and scream like a maniac at the men in masks and tights
leaping and lunging in the box--and I just know she wanted
a piece of the action, I can just imagine:
"Ladies and Gentlemens The Virago Viejat"
And damn it! That's exactly how she went out--screaming
at the sissies wrestling on the TV, screaming herself
toa heart attack! I think she caught wind of a high stakes
rumble in the skies, yeah, and she said, “Dios! Tag me int"
And she's my paternal great grandmother
Because when the skies darken over
She flashes lightning, curses thunder,, and throws the wind!
