Heat From the Neighborhood
for Oscar Fuentes
by chris the poet
I went for broke last night, yes!
For just a taste, I perched the pimp stage! Yes!
For the rank whore-chicken-donkey slop show
with my Uncle: the neighborhood rag-and-bone man!
Hucking our jamons, mi Tio, the Auctioneer,
Lifts two fingers up (not indecently!) into
the stilted air--pauses...forever! For effect!
And then? Take notes you young hopefuls,
For this next image is truly extraordinary--
Beyond belief, even!
What's that? The cops are coming? How long? Five minutes?
Fantastic!
Now feel it: it's something original every time...
But on this audacious night,
He stuffs an accordion into those hands, there,
A piano into that man's soul, there,
A dancer's graces for that one,
A singer's sorrow for that one...
And see this! How, just for me,
He invents poetry!
Yes! My Uncle! The Maestro! The Maker!
eeeWhat? You don't believe me?
eoeWnat? You really think these people came here with these
gifts? That they worked for this? A bit of talent born? Blood,
sweat, and tears carried them the rést of the way?
Good deeds??? Ptuil Fool! It was by magic alone!
Plain and simple!
They'll let anybody in nowadays, won't they?
